Week 7: League of Legends!

Hey!

So this week was our first ever reader suggestion by Tri! He gave us an interesting challenge, which was to pick a League of Legends character and draw something based upon them!

This was particularly fun because Su has never actually played LoL.. And I’ve played it only a couple of times. So neither of us have much knowledge about it. So! We did some research, picked a character and went ahead to draw something new. I hope we did the characters justice!

Materials: Fineliner and black pencil

I chose to draw Ahri, as of course I am drawn to Japanese folklore – and she really is just such a cool character aesthetically! In all of the official artwork I saw, she had a cool, elegant aura with an element of badass! I wanted to draw a simple piece that solely focused on her, so I could play with her personality – almost like she is about to cause some havoc!

I opted to use monotone and simple materials – I wanted to practice shading, play with shadows and create depth in the image without drawing from the expression she has. I’m pretty pleased with the piece overall but there is a lot I want to work on next time.

Su says “I was so happy when we got a theme suggestion, we were tasked to draw our favourite League of Legends character.

I’d heard of it but never played it so you can imagine my surprise when I Googled the characters, there were tonnes! I was spoilt for choice, but in the end I picked Lux, the Lady of Luminosity. I envisaged her hand maidens assisting her with her armour before going to a League of Legends fight.

I started the drawing with one pen and finished it with another, as such I feel it’s unbalanced, however I’m glad I added the background!

Lux reminded me of Hilde from Soul Calibur 4 which is why I was drawn to pick her!

  2. Hey guys, thank you for going with League of Legends! I havent had time to take a closer look just now.

    Vicki, Ahri was an excellent choice! I dont play her but my brother does. She’s one of the most fun and mobile character on the map. Did you know that Ahri is actually an assassin? Squishy carry fears her because she can dash in, dash out, and you are done for. She also has the most playful evil nature. “Dont you trust me?”

    For the piece, I’m actually surprised that you chose black and white color. I was expecting a colorful portrait because of her characteristics. You set yourself a real challenge here. I especially like the lighting work on her hair, making it look more realistic and even shiny. Her face and expression are also very good, although it’s more on the gentle childish version of Ahri. I also love her tails, the signature piece. They definitely look fur-ry. I’m not fond of the background because it makes the whole piece look darker. Maybe try a light background and use the other tails to provide the depth. She’s a nine-tail so it should be plenty of layers :). Last part is the orbs, they look like Naruto’s Rasengan to be sure, and she should only have one orb (two is too OP!).

    Su’s choice of Lux was also a surprise although the art work cant be mistaken from someone else. I was expecting Su would pick Vi or Leona because they are on the masculine side 😛 but Lux will do. I absolutely love the background and the outfit of all three characters. The red curtains, the yellow plank wall, the white windows with the blue shade of the sky outside, all look great together. Lux’s dress with the rune symbols is a great final touch! If anything to improve, it’s the proportion of the maidens. The left one, her head is a bit small compared to her body, while the second one, is the shoulder and neck. Also, the upper body of second maiden is a bit two dimentional. I know you are playing with angle and side view so that’s something to look out for. Finally, the luminosity staff should be more luminous 😀

    Overall great work as always! You guys sure did a fantastic job in portraiting a character of a game which you havent played/played little before. I cant imagine what it will be if you guys were familiar with them. You guys can probably invent some new skins (skin is basically a theme of the character, so same person but different outfit and shape). Actually, why dont you put that down as a topic? to reinvent someone you are familiar with to give them a brand new look (similar to the gender-bender week). Doesnt have to be League characters but anything well established.

    1. Firstly, thank you for the suggestion! It was so refreshing for us to both have a challenge that neither of us were totally familiar with – it definitely pushed our creative boundaries and meant we had to do some research.

      And thanks for such detailed feedback! I did in the end regret only using black and white for my picture, as after it was finished I realised so much more depth could have been achieved using colours. And yes, oops! I gave her two orbs.. I didn’t quite realise it should have been one. But I’m glad you liked the piece.

      I love Su’s piece and how much of a story she created for the character. I think she went above and beyond for this challenge, adding more detail in! I’ll be sure to give her a nudge to log on and check your feedback.

      Excellent topic suggestion too! We have two lined up for this week and then next, so this will be added for Week 11!

      Aha, I did check out the characters you suggested: Vi or Leona and they totally seem more the type for me to draw inspiration from, especially Leona! They are less romanticised than Lux, I think I would personally revisit this theme because there are just so many characters!
      My picture suffered from a lack of proportions and a flatness that I could try to salvage!
