Oops! So sorry for the belated post. I took a last minute trip to Tokyo this weekend so I wasn’t quite able to get to writing the post. But we did do our pictures on time for the deadline – which is the most important!
This week’s theme was chosen by me and I decided to go for something more open ended – to really push our ability to think of something with less direction and also showcase our different talents. So – I decided we should pick one song we have been listening to recently and draw what we feel from it!
Su’s Piece
Materials: pro marker and water colour, fine liner.
Su Says ,”Play lists on YouTube are a wonderful way of being reunited with old songs! I heard Iron Maiden’s Dance of Death and decided to use this as my muse.
The flames and costume reflect the frightening nature of the song narration: a guy being pulled into a dance of death with unknown people in an unknown realm.
It was not as surreal as I would have liked. Perhaps covering her entire face in a mask would have been more visually striking.
Also, I remembered how challenging it is drawing flames!
Vicki’s Piece
Materials: Highlighter pens, Copic markers
Recently I have started listening to The Beatles a lot, which lead me to remember this beautiful cover of “Across the Universe”. I’m a bit of a space lover – I love sci-fi, space imagery and facts. So I decided to go with something a little spacey!
For this image I played with colour and white spaces, with the intention to invert the colours after it was finished. The actual design itself I kept simple on purpose so that I could experiment with the bright colours and see how much of an impact inverting it did!
It was a lot of fun and I actually want to rework this piece with a much more complicated design, now I have a feel for this way of working!
So that’s week 5! The next challenge is Su’s choice, so be sure to check in next Friday and see what she chose. Don’t forget to leave a comment if you want to give us some feedback, or make a suggestion for the next challenge!
Su’s piece is a bit scary but it reminds me of “Princess Mononoke”. It does have a wild tribal feel to it. The fire was definitely a success because I can recognize it right away 😀
Vicki’s piece does look like a cover for one of the romantic songs. The way you come up with the color mix looks simple but amazingly hard to do from scratch. I dont know what inverting is but putting it back to back with the original does give great contrast.
Great work as always!
I dont know if you guys play League of Legends but a piece on your favorite character would be great!

Thanks for the comments, Vicki’s piece was otherworldly and expertly done in it’s inverted execution! Perhaps if I had watched Princess Mononoke before, I’d have pulled inspiration from it, it is a lot neater and cleaner in its costumery!
